These are reviews published on Google, not on Retreat Ledger. This was a well-planned trip from start to finish. I had researched trekking options to Machu Picchu for years, and the Salkantay trek consistently stood out because of its strong reviews and reputation. From my first contact with the sales team, communication was clear and responsive. They answered all of my questions and helped me move my trip from October 2025 to June 2026, which worked out perfectly because I was able to celebrate my 40th birthday during the trek. I also felt reassured because two friends had completed the trip before me—one on the 5-day classic trek and one on the 5-day premium trek—and both had great things to say about the accommodations and overall experience. The overall experience was excellent from start to finish, with only a few small suggestions that could make the planning process even smoother for future travelers. Highlights: The sales office was very responsive whenever I emailed them. Our tour guide, Juve, was knowledgeable, friendly, caring, and honest. He guided us every step of the way, handled any issues that came up during the trek, and served as our host, photographer, and leader. Juve was with us around the clock, answered every question, and cared for us like family. Yafer, the horseman, carried our luggage between camps, helped serve our meals, and provided water at each stop. Wilmer was our personal chef, and the food was fresh, delicious, and plentiful. There was so much food that it was impossible to finish everything. Wilmer even baked a fresh birthday cake for me, beautifully decorated with whipped cream, my name, and three matchsticks used as candles—such a clever touch. Juve was wonderful on the mountains and trails. He stayed either in front of us or behind us, never pressured us to finish sooner than we needed to, and never made us feel babysat, which I really appreciated. This was one of my best birthdays ever, and it will be hard to top. The mountains were beautiful, the air was as pure as it could be, the trails were clean and green, and the local people of Salkantay were warm and welcoming. Cons: 1. Better communication about add-ons, such as mountain hikes, short trips, and upcoming booking deadlines would be helpful. I missed several short trips because, by the time I finalized my booking, they were already sold out. Fortunately, I was able to find another company for those short trips. 2. A hotel pickup reminder would have helped. There was a small miscommunication, and I was not reminded of the pickup time from the hotel, which created some panic and uncertainty. The agency and tour guide apologized for the miscommunication, but it could have been avoided with an automatic reminder system. 3. Medal at the end of the trek: In January, my friend received both a certificate of completion and a medal after booking the premium classic trek. By the time I completed my trek, medals were no longer included. The medal was beautiful and would have been a great addition to my wall. Please bring the medal back, or at least give travelers the option to buy one if they want it.
Read on GoogleMy partner and I completed both ‘The Classic 5 Day Salkantay trek’ and the ‘Ausgante, Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley 2 day’ trek. Both were incredible and could not recommend enough. The Classic 5 Day Salkantay trek. Was an incredible hike with amazing views and finishing at the famous Machu Picchu. From start to finish this was a very well planned trip, we did not have to think about anything!! The accomodation through out the hike was fantastic! The sky domes were booked out at the first campsite so we stayed at the “base camp” which was just next to the sky domes and they were similar to the premium jungle domes on day 3. They had comfortable beds, a view of the mountain, I could not fault them. The mountain view domes have to be the best accomodation I’ve ever stayed at!! For the jungle domes we were upgraded to the super jungle domes which had a hot shower and private toilet! Also incredible. Finally the hotel in Aquas Calientes, was quite nice. No faults. The food on trip was incredible! Always more than plenty for everyone and so delicious. If you have any dietary requirements I highly recommend going with this company! 2 people in our group were gluten intolerant and the staff always ensured there were suitable alternatives. Finally our guide, Wilo, was amazing. Very kind, patient, informative and had excellent English! Cannot fault him, he was the best tour guide I have ever met! Cons. Nothing to do with Salkantay trekking company but the Salkantay trek is a bit of a zoo with hundreds of people going every day. This is to be expected but was a nice change doing a hike with minimal people such as what we experienced with the Rainbow a mountain 2 day hike! Ausgante, Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley 2 day hike This trip was possibly better than the Salkantay trek in my opinion, mainly due to less people and possibly more beautiful views. Other than the locals there were maximum 10 other hikers on the trail at the same time as our group. Again Salkantay trekking was fantastic from pick up to drop off. Food was incredible (especially as compared to the Salkantay trek this was all cooked on camp stoves), Juan our tour guide was again knowledgable patient and spoke good English. The accomodation is sleeping in tents and sleeping bags at ~ 4800m elevation. It gets cold overnight so pack warm clothes!!! (I think we got to - 10 degrees Celsius overnight) Hiking at altitude. If you have spent a few days acclimatising in Cusco this hike is still high risk for Altitude sickness as you are jumping up to 4800m sleeping elevation in one night. Our guide was excellent however, kept a very slow steady pace during the hike and encouraged deep breathing and frequent stops. My parter and I had seen our local doctor before coming and were on Diamox, a Alltitude medication to help reduce the risks of Alltitude sickness. We had minimal effects of Alltitude during this hike but the other two people in our group seemed to struggle. I would highly recommend going to a travel clinic prior to doing this hike and telling them what hikes you are planning. Otherwise wise this hike was great and would recommend.
Read on GoogleOur family of four (kids ages 16 &12) had an amazing 5-day Salkantay trek. Every detail was thoughtfully planned and communicated by the tour company. Challenging and beautiful days of hiking through varied terrain - up to glacial peaks and through lush jungle. Beautiful hot springs one day. Delicious, healthy food - so many different dishes offered each meal. A terrific guide. Lodging with comfortable beds and gorgeous views. Highly recommend!
Read on GoogleThis trekking company was absolutely amazing! We just got back from the 5 day classic Salkantay trek and our expectations were exceeded in every way. Breakfast lunch and dinner we had a three course meal with plenty of options to suit everyone’s wants. Our guide Hector was incredible - so attentive to everyone’s needs, knowledge about everything and really made our group feel like family! Would definitely recommend this group to anyone considering a trek to Machu Picchu
