Lumbini Panditarama is an official branch of the main Panditarama monastery network based in Myanmar and is situated next to the Sacred Gardens in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. Established in 1999, the center has been offering in-house retreats for the last 27 years (except during Covid). Each practice period begins on the 1st of September and continues until the 31st of March of the following year. During the remaining months, the resident teachers travel overseas to conduct retreats. The meditation technique taught here is deeply rooted in the Theravadin insight meditation tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw of Myanmar, and I found the atmosphere to carry a strong sense of seriousness and practice intensity. The center accommodates only around 25–30 practitioners at a time, so it is advisable to apply well in advance, especially for longer retreats. I applied two months earlier and was still placed on a waiting list before eventually being accepted. The resident teachers are the German Sayadaw U Vivekananda and the Burmese Sayalay Bhaddamanika. Both are highly proficient in Buddhist theory and practice, with nearly three decades of continuous teaching experience. They underwent intensive training and were certified to teach under the guidance of the revered Sayadaw U Panditabhivamsa of Myanmar. The center has two accommodation options: 3 Triple Room (TR) complexes and 19 Kammatthana Kutis (KKs), which are single units. Yogis staying for more than a month are generally given a KK, while TRs are reserved for shorter-term practitioners. Even in the TRs, usually only two yogis at most were placed in a room in order to maintain quietude and avoid overcrowding. All KKs and TRs have attached washrooms and water-heating units as of March 2026. Meditators receive four interviews per week: two with the Sayadaw and two with the Sayalay on alternating days. The interviews are formal and concise, lasting around 15–20 minutes. I found the teachers firm yet warm and helpful, creating a good balance between seriousness and a homely atmosphere during longer stays. Live Dhamma talks are conducted several days a week, while recordings of previous talks are played on the remaining days. The food served at the center was of good quality and nutritionally sufficient and balanced. Two meals are served daily, following a mainly lacto-ovo vegetarian menu with dairy and boiled eggs provided every day, though non-vegetarian options were occasionally available for lunch. Breakfast follows a fixed Western-style menu, while lunch usually consists of rice, vegetable dishes, and desserts such as cakes, chocolate, or sweet breads. Tea, coffee, and milk powder are available with meals. For evening juice, honey, ginger, and lime were provided. Although there is no formal dress code, modest clothing is expected, and revealing or overly tight clothing is not allowed. Another major beneficial factor I found was the near-complete absence of unnecessary communication among yogis, which greatly helps foster an environment conducive to deep practice. One slight, but insignificant, inconvenience was the distance between the KKs and the main facilities, connected via the central walkway. Even the nearest KK is around 100m from the meditation hall and dining area, while the furthest adds another 30–40m. Maintaining the generally slow pace of walking practice becomes difficult in such cases. For context, a Mahasi-styled three-phase slow walk from the nearest KK to the meditation hall took nearly 25 minutes (yes, I timed it 😀). There is no fixed minimum or maximum stay during each teaching period, as it depends entirely on the discretion of the teachers. The center also runs purely on donations, with no set daily cost. I highly recommend supporting the center however possible if you stay there, as both the teachers and staff dedicate immense time and energy toward maintaining the best possible meditative environment for yogis.

Wonderful meditation center for Vipassana in the Mahasi Sayadaw Tradition. The two teachers are deeply expert and guides you in the practice step by step, with utmost precision. Suitable expecially for long retreat, so the practice can have the time for developing. Last but not least, tha accomodations are nice and the food is good, so the mind can relax.
